PhoneFilm – A Workshop Project for the Hsinchu Fuel Factory
Filming Possibilities
With or without actors.
With the voice or image of author / filmmaker.
With or without witnesses / “real people”.
Surprise yourself and thereby surprise your audience.
Make them curious about the Fuel Factory.
Show them, that there can be a bridge between contemporary technology and history.

Director: Huang Ting-Chieh

“Who am I?”, “Where am I from?”. The residents who used to lived in the Sixth Fuel Factory had lost themselves for a long time.
The film is presented its scenes through the way – Mirror in Mirror. A smart phone is used to link the past and present. I hope to awake people when they see the film.
The fuel factory was built in 1943, a time during the Japanese colonial occupation period. The Chinese Nationalist Government is forced to come to Taiwan in 1949 after the Chinese Civil War. The old houses inside the factory built by the veterans are their homes. There are many traces of World War II that can still be seen everywhere after 70 years .
However, this part of history is not only unfamiliar but also unbearable for Taiwanese.
Therefore, let’s retrieve the lost memory of World War II for Taiwanese .

Director: 米克羅 / Claude Vernet Michel
Title: 《身處憶地》 / “In a foreign place”
Runtime: 4’30”
Production Date: 2019/10/12
“In a foreign place” is a video that brings us back to 1949 where Republic of China’s soldiers and their families lived in the sixth fuel factory until 2001. As a foreigner, when I had the chance to visit that place, I felt like I was living in the past because I was trying to picture how it feels like to live here, a place which brings tons of memories. I found out those soldiers lived close to each other, like a neighborhood. 4 minutes of this video wasn’t enough to show how exciting I was to actually go back to 1949, the year it all started.
第三部
“Foley”
Director: Tsai Yi-Hsun
Title: “Foley”
Runtime: 04’45”
Location: The former Imperial Japanese Navy’s Sixth Fuel Factory, Hsinchu Branch
Production date: 2019/10
The former Imperial Japanese Navy’s Sixth Fuel Factory carries over 70 years history.
The legacy of each period, such as chimney, bricks, walls, windows, and doors, they coexist at the factory. It practically indicates the historical change of this island, yet it also gather our sight at a junction of chaos. This film wants to transpose the hierarchy of audio and video. Intentionally simplify and crop the image to limit our sight, and create another boundless frame to break the original one of the video. It is parallel to the historical context of the former Imperial Japanese Navy’s Sixth Fuel Factory but also remain certain distance. And at last the hearing will construct the imagination of the former Imperial Japanese Navy’s Sixth Fuel Factory in our brain through the familiar and strange sound.

Director: Liu Pei-an
Title: “Children do not Need to Know too Much”
Runtime: 04’30”
Shooting Location: The Former Imperial Japanese Navy’s Sixth Fuel Factory, Hsinchu Branch
Production Date: 2019/09
Facing our history, should we choose to forget or remember? After the White Terror, our history has become ambiguous and prohibited to be spoken. Those who are ignorant are innocent. And the less our next generation know the better. Therefore, when passing down our history, there are always cracks which are gradually shattering and might finally collapse one day.
The film let our previous generation’s history interact, collage and restructure with the Former Imperial Japanese Navy’s Sixth Fuel Factory. Besides, through mobile phones, these fragments of memories would be reconstructed and the passage of the past and modern life would be connected. As if being in a dream-like collage space, we are able to make the interaction and conversation with our history.

When I first entered into the Former Imperial Japanese Navy’s Sixth Fuel Factory, it was like entering into scattered ruins where only emptiness and silence left.
After watching “The Documentary Of Big Chimney Factory 1942-2014,” my heart vibrated to many scenes in the documentary. Those refrigerators, cabinets, and those warm and friendly residences were all gone and only deserted rooms left.
This film, “The Days Under the Big Chimney,” used the phone to replay some of the video clips in the documentary, showing the contrast between the present and the past in the same space. Besides, this film recorded those days’ people living under the big chimney, from the hardship of living, building the houses to the day the place was announced as a national historic building, and residences were forced to move out.
